The Bee Hive has a brand new roof!
As many are aware, the roof on our building at 8 East Idaho Street was not in good shape!
Our wetter than usual Spring weather and falling ceiling tile made it clear that something had to be done right away to avoid structural damage to this historical (circa 1887) building.
We looked at the following options:
- Try to repair it for the 5th time.
- Patch damaged areas, use special primer for rubber roofs, and have several coats of silicone-based coating applied.
- Remove the rubber roof entirely, repair the deck, and install a brand new TPO roof over the prepared deck.
Repairing the roof was obviously not going to be a long term solution.
- Patching, priming, and silicone-coating the roof would add an imense amount of weight to a flat roof on an old building with two existing layers of roofing material, was expensive, and carried a one-year guarantee.
- Demo of existing roof and installation of a felt-backed TPO roof comes with a 20- year guarantee against leaks and can be re-coated for another fifteen to twenty years of useful life. The downside: it costs a LOT!
Our executive board members, Sandy & Dennis Cooper, made the painful decision to remove the old roof and install a new one. Work is now complete. The inside is dry, and we can now begin installing new ceiling tiles and eventually refinishing the floor in the "Big Room" of The Bee Hive.
We feel truly blessed that there were enough funds in our non-profit's prudent reserve to cover the cost of the new roof.
We will be having fundraisers in the near future to help offset the expenses of this project and restore our prudent reserve fund to a healthy level.
