SET YOUR GOALS AND GET STARTED WITH CLASS ONE
Have you ever wanted to set aside a supply of food for uncertain times or unexpected events?
Building a food storage system can feel overwhelming and expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. This class will give you practical tools to create a realistic, affordable plan that can support you and your family when life becomes unpredictable.
There are many reasons to maintain a reserve of food and essential supplies. It doesn’t take a major disaster—such as an earthquake, wildfire, flood, extended power outage, war, or economic crisis—to make feeding your family difficult. Everyday disruptions can have the same effect. We all remember how quickly toilet paper, masks, and hand sanitizer disappeared at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and how expensive those items became when they were available at all. The same vulnerabilities apply to food, medical supplies, fuel, and other everyday necessities. A job loss, illness, supply-chain disruption, crop failure, inflation, or a prolonged trucking strike may not be classified as “disasters,” but they can create serious hardship if no preparations are in place. Having food and essential items stored “just in case” is a wise and responsible way to protect your household.
There are many strategies to help you reach your food storage goals, increase your self‑sufficiency, and feel more secure during challenging times. Even if your motivation is simply to simplify grocery shopping, reduce food costs, or free up more time for the things you enjoy, a well-planned food storage system can help. These two classes will answer your questions about how to begin, what and how much to store, and how to build your supply—even on a limited budget.

This class builds on the foundation you established in Class 1 and shows you how to turn your food‑storage goals into a practical, achievable plan.
We’ll explore the many ways to acquire long‑term storage foods and how to store them properly for maximum longevity, nutrition, safety, and quality. You’ll also get an overview of storage methods and techniques, along with guidance on how to cook confidently with the foods you’ve set aside.
For those who want to deepen their skills, Bee Tree Folk School also offers dedicated classes on canning, freezing, pickling and fermenting, freeze‑drying, root cellaring, and other preservation methods. These courses complement our broader sustainability and preparedness curriculum and help you become proficient in the techniques that support long‑term self‑reliance.
